IYA2909 in Trinidad & Tobago

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is a global celebration of astronomy and its contribution to society and culture, with strong emphasis on education, public participation and the involvement of young people, and with events at national, regional, and global levels. Many thousands of individuals in over 135 countries are already involved, forming the world's largest ever astronomy network. IYA2009 represents astronomy as a peaceful global scientific endeavor that unites astronomers in an international, multicultural family of scientists, working together to find answers to some of the most fundamental questions that humankind has ever asked.

The International Astronomical Union and UNESCO initiated IYA2009 to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery.

The Caribbean Institute of Astronomy (CARINA) is the IAU-designated Regional Node in Trinidad and Tobago for IYA2009 activities. CARINA will be partnering with several astronomy, science and educational organizations to ensure a successful participation in this global event. The list of partners includes the NIHERST/NGC National Science Centre (NSC), the Trinidad and Tobago Astronomical Society (TTAS) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) Department of Physics. Trinidad & Tobago will begin its IYA activities with several of these groups launching media events, public observing sessions and awareness campaigns.
