The International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) is a worldwide celebration of astronomy highlighted by the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei's observations of the sky using an astronomical telescope. This global event was initiated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO with the aim to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme "The Universe, Yours to Discover".
Trinidad & Tobago will participate in IYA2009 by hosting a large number of events and projects promoting astronomy. This website is the main resource for IYA2009 in Trinidad & Tobago and will contain all the information needed to keep abreast of what's going on, where and when.

Members of the astronomy community, and the general public warmly received the national launch of The International Year of Astronomy 2009, which took place and The National Science Center on Saturday 24th January 2009.
TTAS Launches IYA2009

The Trinidad & Tobago Astronomical Society (TTAS) officially launched their IYA2009 activities yesterday at a cocktail reception at Mt. St. Benedict.

The stroke of midnight at the beginning of 2009 marked the international launch of IYA2009. In Brazil, fireworks resembling stars, comets, planets and other cosmic objects lit up the sky over Rio de Janeiro. The Dawn of IYA project got underway with the largest coordinated solar observation project in history. The Cosmic Diary was launched with over 50 professional astronomers blogging online. The 365 Days of Astronomy projects began its run of daily podcasts.
